Because it is hard to find interesting new places to fly with our flying wings (withouth traveling many kilometers) we are recording some copter footage now.
With a copter we can check out locations that were hard to obtain with the flying wings….like the botanic garden in Bielefeld.
Here’s a screenshot of some video footage (no, we did not manipulate the colors, it was that colorful).
We met Crazy Horst, Alex and Maleen in Kassel and had a great time (we will meet again).

I have to fine-tune the GoPro Gimbal, because it shakes, even if the copter is not shaking.
I’m currently working on a DIY long range system. It operates in the 868MHz ISM band and will have a transmitting power of 500mW. While this sounds crazy, the system will be completly legal and comply to local regulations here in germany. First tests seem to be very promising. I got 1.7km range on the ground without any problems and I think that the system is capable of more. But my testsite was simply to small to go further without braking LOS.
First testflights without FPV succeeded and revealed a minor hardware problem that I need to fix before I can begin with the FPV testflights. As soon as the prototype works fine and completed the first successful FPV flights I will create a PCB to replace my prototype.
Sadly, the regulations here restrict the use of this band in a way that will make the system vulnerable to interference and illegal use of the band by other users. I think that the overall reliability will be somewhere between 35MHz and commercial avialable UHF systems. Here are some pictures of the prototype to give you an impression of how it looks like.

Last weekend we met with Alex, Maleen and Crazy Horst.
Sadly one very nice flight was not recorded because of the GoPro that did not react. Anyway, we got enough good shots for a new episode.
E14 will be online friday or saturday.
Okay, my new Wii Quadcopter is working.
I bought the Frame+Controlerboard+GoPro Gimbal at http://quadframe.com/
– E-Max CF2822 motors
-18A ESCs (Aerizon i think)
-8×4.5 props from the mikrokopter shop
I already did some fpv-flights with it and it works well so far, but some things i want to improve before i mount the GoPro cam to the copter:
-reduce vibrations (propeller balancing and maybe adding some rubber plates)
-change to 10×4.5 props or use motors with more thrust (thrust is okay without the GoPro and the 2 axes gimbal but i think its not enough for the GoPro)
This time we met a hot-air balloon, a microlight and a 3D RC plane in the air 🙂
It was a great experience to fly with the microlight. We plan to meet again for more aerial footage of the microlight.
